Technical writing means a writing style used to deliver technical information to the readers such as manuals, reports, pamphlets etc.

Literary writing is a writing style to express writer’s personal views through different literary forms such as novels, poems, stories, dramas etc.

The difference in both is as below :

  • Technical writing is to inform and instruct the readers about some product or activity. Literary writing is to amuse and entertain readers.
  • In technical writing language used is direct and factual. In literary writing, language used is creative and imaginative. It mostly uses literary devices like similes, metaphor, hyperbole, alliteration etc.
  • Technical writing appeals to minds of readers whereas literary writing is useful to appeal to emotions.
  • In technical writing jargon means technical words; simple sentences are used that make it impersonal in nature. Readers are expected to have background knowledge of the topic. Literary writing is for all types of readers who are interested in reading it.

Thus both styles serve some purpose and are used widely.
