Answer:

The fall of Troy could have been easily avoided, if only the Trojan people gave Helen back to her husband Menelaus

Before starting the siedge, Menelaus and Ulysses went to Troy, asking the Trojan noblemen for Helen’s renstitution. The Trojans refused, however, so the Greeks had to avenge the offence through a war.

The Trojans were given some chances to end the war. In Iliad Book 3, Menelaus and Paris duel: whoever won would have got Helen’s hand and wealth. Menelaus was the winner, but he didn’t kill his rival.

The goddess Aphrodite saved Paris and carried him to his bedroom, where she made Paris and Helen have sex: by repeating their unlawful union, they forced the war to start again, after a short truce.

The truce was broken by the Trojan Pandarus, under the instigation of Athena, who shot an arrow towards Menelaus. The Greek king was only slightly injured, but such offence had to be harshly avenged.
