The Nawab of Awadh could not stop the British from taking over his kingdom. The East India Company annexed the state of Awadh on the ground of Alleged Misrule. The policy was introduced by Lord Dalhousie. According to this policy, the Company could annex any state if they thought that the people were not ruled properly. Awadh was annexed on 7 February, 1856.
The grounds on which the British annexed the state, formerly known as Oudh state, were baseless. The people of Awadh had to face even more hardships than before. Thousands of artisans and count members were thrown out of jobs. Taxes were raised to a point where people could not pay them. Temples and religious places of worships lost their patrons. Businessmen could not conduct trade. Every section of the society was affected.
