CH4 + Cl2 -->CH3Cl + HCl
CH3Cl +Cl2-->CH2Cl2+HCl
CH2Cl2+ Cl2--> CHCL3+HCl

here cl2 is the chlorine
and during the substitution reaction of methane(CH4) with chlorine,a hydrogen atom is replaced(or substituted ) by chlorine atom and thus we get chloroform CHCl3
but the final product of this reaction is carbontetra chloride that is

CHCl3+ Cl 2--> CCl4+ HCl
