Answer:

This experiment was carried out in the Bedford level canal area in England. 3 poles of equal length was fixed at intervals of 5 kilometre. It shows that the poles had same height above the water in the canal is flattened earth. When the poles are viewed from another end of the canal, the middle pole looked slightly higher. This proves the earth is in spherical shape.

Question

How could you prove that Earth is spherical in shape using the Bedford level experiment ?

Answer

  • This experiment was conducted in Bedford Level Canal area in Britain. The water level of the canal was taken as a base measurement. Three poles were then fixed with intervals of about 5 km in such a way that they would rise to the same height above the level of water in the canal.

  • When a telescope was positioned in such a way that the top of Pole A was in line with that of Pole C, it was found that the line of sight was intersecting the middle Pole B.

Since the middle Pole B appear higher because of the Earth’s curvature, it was proved that the Earth is not flat but is a curved structure.
