The communist movement in Vietnam was closely related to the rise of nationalism in that country.

1. The objective behind the foundation of the communist party of Vietnam by Ho Chi Minh was to liberate the country from French colonial rule.

2.  The party under Ho led the struggle against the French and defeated them in 1954 leading to the creation of an independent Vietnam.

3. The Communist party under Ho led the Vietnamese in the war against the United States from 1956 to 1975.

4. During this period, Vietnam was divided into North and South Vietnam. South Vietnam was ruled by a pro-American government. But the people of the South looked towards the Communist Party which ruled in the North as inspiration for unification of the country.

5. When the war was over with the Communist Party of Vietnam victorious against the USA, a unified Vietnam was established under the leadership of the Communist Party.
