Dolphins are mammals much like human beings and they are warm blooded. Hence they breathe using lungs. Crocodiles are reptiles and they respire using lungs instead of gills.  This also enables them to be submerged in water for extended periods of time holding their breath. An involuntary dive under water due to a threat can last upto 30 minutes or more!
