Cytokinins represent a possible second messenger for auxin signalling in regulating bud activity. Endogenous CKs can be transported acropetally (towards the shoot apex) in the xylem sap, enter axillary buds and promote their outgrowth. Thus, CKs antagonize auxin in apical dominance.
