Decomposer are those organisms which break down the dead remains and waste products of other organisms.

Freeliving decomposers break down the complex inorganic substances into simple organic substances which goes into the soil and are again taken up by the plants with the help of micro-organisms and free-living nitrogen fixers. In this way decomposer facilitate recycling of matter in order to maintain balance in ecosystem.

Decomposers break complex organic matter present in biodegradable wastes into simple nutrients in soil, These nutrients are again, used up by the plants. Due to this reason they are called as natural cleansing agents.
