How deforestation leads to ground water level

Deforestation causes sunlight to reach the ground directly. It causes the ground to dry up and increases the evaporation of surface water, so the soil does not absorb it. Deforestation also causes the rainwater to become surface runoff, with little time to seep into the ground.

Because trees release water vapor into the atmosphere, fewer trees means less rain, which disrupts the water table (or groundwater level). A lowered water table can be devastating for farmers who can't keep crops alive in such dry soil . On the other hand, deforestation can also cause flooding.

Groundwater depletion is primarily caused by sustained groundwater pumping.

  • Excessive pumping can overdraw the groundwater "bank account"
  • drying up of wells.
  • reduction of water in streams and lakes.
  • deterioration of water quality.
  • increased pumping costs.
  • land subsidence.
