In the year 1939, when the Second World War broke out Kalam was only of Eight years. This was the time when the demand for the tamarind seeds got increased. Kalam used to gather those seeds and traded them in the markets. Shamsuddin (his cousin) used to distribute papers. The passenger would not halt at Rameshwaram and the packets of papers were thrown from the moving train. Thus, Shamsuddin gave him the job to collect the newspapers. This is how he earned his first earnings.
