How did Abel Merryweather came to know he was dead.......?

When Victoria said him that these all people were thinking that he was dead, then Abel Merryweather came to know that he was dead. Abel was just lying on his bed due to headache. But those people thought him to be dead. By this incident he came to know how selfish his children were. Their only motive was to grab all the resources which he had. Victoria loved him from the core of her heart. So, she disclosed everything going on there and also that he was dead.

before dinner,Mrs Slater planned to serve some eatables on a tray to grandfather,as he did not want dinner. When she reached his room, the old man was lying on his bed. Mrs Slater thought he was asleep. when she went to wake him up,she found him to be quite cold and she believed he was dead.
