As long as they acknowledged Akbar's suzerainty, paid tribute and supplied troops when required, the Rajput rulers were allowed to retain their territories.That policy of conciliation and compromise won a number of Rajput kingdoms over to Akbar's side and further weakened whatever remained of Rajput unity.
