the war’s effects were delayed because British manufacturers had large stockpiles of cotton. Eventually, though, it caused severe economic hardship in cotton-manufacturing towns.

However, this did not affect British foreign policy, which remained in favour of neutrality rather than backing the Confederacy. UK cotton manufacturers instead turned to alternative sources of raw cotton such as Egypt and India.

Soon after the end of the war production was back up to pre-war levels, though raw material costs were higher than before.

The cotton industry was by far Britain's most important source of wealth in the mid 19th century. In 1860 fully 38% of the UK's entire trade revenue came from the export of cotton cloth. Up to five million people (out of 30 million) were employed, either directly or indirectly, in the textile industry and its supporting infrastructure.

During the 1850s, about 80% of all the raw cotton needed by the industry came from the United States. India supplied another 10%, and Brazil and Egypt most of the remaining 10%. Between 1855 and 1859 the USA produced a yearly average of 3.36 million bales of cotton, of which 1.80 million were bought by the UK.

The Civil War in America led the British to look for a new source to continue the regular supply of raw cotton in England.

Explanation:

  • Before the Civil War, the majority of raw cotton came from America.
  • As the war began, the Union blockage ports where the South supplied cotton to Britain.
  • To maintain a regular supply of cotton it was necessary to find a new source of cotton for mills.
  • Britishers turned to India for their needs. Before the Civil War, India supplied cotton by 31%, which increased in 1862 by 67%.
