The story The Ghat of the Only World written by Amitav Ghosh is a prideful tribute to his Kashmiri friend named Shahid, a poet, who had died of cancer in the US.30
EXPLANATION:
- Amitav had first come to know about Shahid, who was a poet, when he had read Shahid’s collection of poems The Country without a Post Office. Shahid and Amitav had studied together at the Delhi University; however they had never met. In the year 1998 &1999 Amitav and Shahid had quite a few conversations on the phone and had also met a few times. However their acquaintance did not develop until Amitav and Shahid moved to Brooklyn, US.
- They lived in the same neighbourhood, with Shahid living some 8 blocks away from Amitav’s residence. They started began to catch up for occasional meals. Their casual acquaintance transformed into a beautiful friendship. They both had common dislikes and likes. They met at Shahid’s house frequently. However, Shahid who had cancer, his condition was deteriorating slowly. Nevertheless this did not stand in the progress of his friendship with Amitav.
