While in office, the 17th President of the United States of America - Andrew Johnson (1808 – 1875), attempted to build his own party. He envisaged a party consisting of Southerners and conservative Northerners. This plan however did not succeed.
He then removed the Secretary of War – Edwin Stanton from office and attempted to replace him with his own man Lorenzo Thomas.
These acts of his, led to his impeachment in 1868.
