Ausable was a clever secret agent. When he found Max in his room with a pistol, he did not lose his courage. He made a fabricated story about the balcony under the balcony. Max took it as gospel truth. Just then they heard a knock at the door. Max suspected the arrival of the police. He retraced his steps, and reached the window in panic. He jumped down on the non-existing balcony and met his tragic end.
