Ausable used 'the knock' in his favor by convincing Max that he called the police for his security in the light of the important documents that he is holding.

Explanation:

"The Midnight Visitor" is a short story written by Robert Arthur.

The story is about the 'midnight visitor', that is a thief, in the house of  secret agent named Ausable. The name of the visitor is Max, who is another secret agent  and an enemy of Ausable.

Ausable, craftily, weaved a story about the balcony to the intruder making him believe that there is a balcony outside the window, which was not true. While Ausable was talking to the intruder, a knock was heard on the door.

Ausable, again, crafted the story and used 'the knock' in his favor by telling him that he called the cops for security, as the documents that he is having are very important. So, as the knock grews louder, the intruder tried to hide on the balcony, which leads to his death.

This shows that Ausable was a clever secret agent and have presence of mind.
