Balkans was a region of geographical and ethinic diversity. The inhabitants belong to slav community. It was under the control of the Ottoman Empire, which was that time weak.

All the nation and empires of Europe has eye over Balkans. They all started extending there control ove it because of its strategic position. This was because the trade route between Europe and Asia passed through Balkans.

But, even due to belonging to same community, the slavs started fighting among themselves for power. The nationalism spirit here  disintegrated the Ottoman Empire and made the region explosive.

These conflicts presented main reason for the world war.

Hope it helped.
