the symbols for the elements was firstfound to be needed by Antoine Lavoisier , who at first suggested the nomenclature of elements for their classification. He selected a list of 33 substances which could not be broken further and then arranged them by their names as:Antimony, silver, zinc, Tin etc which were the English name, which have been now changed by the new french names. But the classification and symbols were not much explanatory and so, thesecond attempt of nomenclature was done by Dalton, who used pictorial symbols for the elements like :etc. There are some more symbols for different elements. But these, elemental symbols were later developed and improved by Berzelius, who used the modern pattern of nomenclature according to which, he used the name of first letter of the element as its symbol. If two elements have name starting with similar letter then, the second letter was used as the symbol.Ex: Carbon - C, Copper (Cuprum)-Cu, Sodium- So , Nitrogen- N , Chromium -Ch etc. However, the modern nomenclature has used, the Latin name of some confusing elements and if two letters are used then the second significant letter of the element is used as: Natrium (sodium) -Na and for Chromium - Cr is used.

Hi friend, Here is the required answer :-
J. J. Berzilius of Sweden proposed that the symbol of the element should be its first letter and second or other letter of the name of the elements or their Greek names. For example :-
Calcium - 'Ca'
Hydrogen - 'H'
Copper- 'Cu' (cupprum- Greek name).
