With his iconic performance of Shehnai, the great maestro took on the challenge of introducing Indian music to the rest of the world. He took part in a variety of international events, such as the World Exposition, the Cannes Film Festival, the Osaka Trade Fair, and others. With the rendition of shehnai, he fashioned a fresh aura. Additionally, Bismillah Khan took part in the Osaka Trade Fair and the Cannes Art Festival. He also took part in the Montreal World Expo. To mark the anniversary of his passing on August 21, 2008, the Indian postal service issued a stamp with a value of Rs. 5. Additionally, Google honoured him with a Google-doodle on the occasion of his 102nd birthday.

Who is Bismillah Khan?

  • Indian musician Bismillah Khan, often known as Ustad or Ustadi, is credited with popularising the reeded woodwind instrument shehnai.
  • While Khan is credited with boosting the shehnai's stature and introducing it to the concert stage, the shehnai had long had significance as a folk instrument used largely in traditional rites.
  • In 2001, he received the Bharat Ratna, the country of India's highest civilian honour, joining M. S. Subbalakshmi and Ravi Shankar as the third classical musician to receive the honour.

Therefore, as a result of Bismillah Khan's reputation, he was chosen to sing at the Independence Day celebration at Delhi's famed Red Fort on August 15, 1947, when the Indian flag was raised and his music was broadcast on television every year. Before 1966, when the Indian government urged that he perform at the Edinburgh International Festival, he declined invitations to do performances in other nations. As a result of this, he earned popularity in the West and went on to make more appearances in Europe and North America.
