Bismillah Khan make shehnai it's status by improving the tonal quality of pungi and changed into shehnai. He choosed the long hollow pipe having seven holes in that.He played the shehnai by closing and opening the holes and it was first played in the shah's chamber by nai and due to this it was named shehnai. The credit of shehnai to be a traditional instrument goes to Bismillah Khan.
