The Monroe Doctrine actually worked in Britain’s economic favour.
In the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars and the South American Wars of Independence, Britain was the only European power with significant South American trading connections. There was no need for military conquest when commercial deals were available.
It was not until the 1895 that the US invoked the Doctrine against Britain, during a border dispute with Venezuela. The resulting arbitration gave Britain most of what it wanted, without the cost of conflict with either the USA or Venezuela.
