The British controlled large parts of Africa in the 19th Century including parts of modern day Kenya where a large part of the region was made up of Maasai people.

As the British expanded their rule the Maasai were not happy and did not want to co-operate with them. On the other hand, the British were suffering from a lack of troops and money and did not want to open a new front. However, as the maasai tribe was hit by large animal and human plagues, they suffered mass deaths and starvation, the British took advantage of this and offered the maasai tribe, a chance of an Alliance.

The Alliance proved to be extremely beneficial to both parties involved including:

1. The Massia tribe was given access to ample food and water, a luxury for them at the time, in return..

2.The Massia were located among key communication lines of British Coloines, the Massia agreed to free movement of british troops in their lands

3. The Massia also became part of the irregular force in the region

4. Massia tribal heads contested with one another over Territory, some of which lied in German Lands, the British sought to help one party against the other.

5. In such a way the British were also able to create problems for German Expansion.
