Indian revolt of 1857 was a widespread Indian rebellion against British rule. it is being caused by the insensitivity of the British military to the religion of its high-caste Hindu soldier serving under British orders., others see it as an inevitable reaction to the British policy of annexation of heirless native states, the annexation of the province of Awadh in 1856, and the introduction of a revenue policy that disadvantaged India’s landed classes. It began in Meerut city as a mutiny in the army of the English East India Company. In that year the Indian soldiers (sepoys) of the Bengal Army recruited by the English East India Company mutinied. The Company ruled India as a sovereign power until 1857. The Indian component of its army was the mainstay of its power. Thus it felt threatened as the mutinous soldier serving under British orders spread the fire of protest to civilian areas. As rural India rallied around the sepoys a civil rebellion engulfed British India. The British crushed the rebellion in 1858.

hey frnd,
the indian rebellion of 1857 had diverse political ,economic, militiry, religious and social causes.
the sepoys a generic term used for native indian soldiers of bengal army derived from persian word sepahi.
had their own list of grievences against the british east indian company administration, caused mainly by the ethnic gulf between the european officers and their indian troops . the spark tht led to the mutiny in several sepoy companies was the issue of new gunpowder cartridges for the enfield rifle in febuary 1857, . a rumor was spread tht the cartridges were made of the cow and pig fat . loading the enfield required the tearing open the greased cartridge with one's teeth . this would have insulted both hindu and muslim religious practices; cows were considered holy by hindus while pigs were meant uncleaned by the muslims.underlying grievences over british taxation and recent land annexations by the british east india company were ignited by the sepoy mutineers and within the weeks dozens of units of indian army joined peasents army joined peasants armies in widespread rebellion . the old aritrocracy , both muslim and hindu, who were seeing their power steadily eroded by the east india company ,also rebillion against british rule.
i hope this helps u!!
