The British followed the policy of Divide and Rule. During the War, the Hindus and the Muslims fought together. The British first favoured the Hindus and victimized the Muslims. After some time, they reversed the policy of treatment. This policy of Divide and Rule ultimately encouraged the Partition of India on the eve of Independence in 1947.
