Looking back in the History:--In 1690,Job Charnok, an agent of the East India Company chose this place for a British trade settlement. The site was carefully selected, being protected by the Hooghly River on the west, a creek to the north, and by salt lakes about two and a half miles to the east.
Calcutta history is not that old as that of Delhi. Calcutta, the city of joy was established in the year 1686, as a resultof the expansion plans of the British Raj. It was during those times that European powers were heading their way towards capturing the small villages of Sutanuti, Govindpur, and Kalikata. Calcutta derived its name from the last of the village settlements of kalikata.
The southern city of Madras reverted to Chennai , its name when the British EastIndia Company established a trading post there in 1639 When Bombay became Mumbai in 1996, the state threatened to prosecute any business that did not change its signs. Only the high court retains the old name today.
What was Calcutta like before the British came?
*.Kalikata is derived from the Bengali wordKalikshetrameaning “Ground of the Goddess Kali.”
*.Some say the city’s name is derived from the location of it’s original settlement on the bank of a canal (khal).
*.Some match the name to the Bengali words for lime (kali) and burnt shell (kata), since the area was noted for manufacturing shell-lime.
*.Another opinionis that the nameis derived from the Bengali term kilkila(meaning, “flat area”), which is mentioned in the old literature.
It's Official!:---
On the 1st of January2001, the West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya announced that the State Capital 'Calcutta' has been officially renamed 'Kolkata'. Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta said that all official communications would now carry the new name - with effect from January 1, 2001. Earlier, the CM, reacting to the Central Government's decision to accept the State's proposal to rename Calcutta, greeted the residentsof the city, saying:"Kolkata has returned to Kolkata!".
