Cambodia's music after the influence of wars

Explanation:

  • During the Cambodian Civil war the radio broadcasting done to the US Armed forces in nearby South Vietnam massively influenced the music in Cambodia. It is said to be picked up by Phnom Penh and to have lead the union of western rock music and traditional Cambodian music to form Cambodian rock music.
  • Also, the Rock and Pop records imported from Latin America, US and Europe, greatly contributed to this influence.
  • All this lead to the change in tone, style, fashion, and lyrical content of the music produced in Cambodia.
  • To end this Music surge, at the end of the Civil war, when Khmer Rouge came to power after defeating the Khmer Republic, 2 million residents of Phnom Penh were evacuated and sent to prison farms or labor camps.
  • Pon Pot and Khmer Rouge together started a genocide and killed almost 90% of all Cambodian musicians, artists, and teachers.
  • After that Original Cambodian music ceased to exist and was only protected far later on by the "Original movement" and the efforts of the Cambodian government and Unesco.
  • But after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime and during and after the Cambodian-Vietnamese war, all the Cambodian rock musicians who somehow survived the genocide found each other and recreated the music, then shortly it became a superhit and received worldwide recognition.
  • But still, most of the music in the post Khmer Rouge period was only produced by a few selected production houses in Cambodia. These production houses include Sunday Productions, Town productions, Ramsay Hang Meas, etc.
