Jack Finney's Third Level deals with harsh war realities. The results of war are irreversible, leaving people in an unstable state. It also deals with modern problems and how ordinary people seek to escape reality by different means. In this story a man named Charley hallucinates and enters the third level, which only has two floors of the Grand Central Station.

Explanation:

  • The plot revolves around Charley, a 31-year-old man who encountered something strange. He entered third level at Grand Central station one day after the job from the Subway. He reminisces the entire experience with his psychiatrist friend Sam.
  • Charley thought he experienced time travel and had reached somewhere in the eighteen-nineties, a time before the world saw two of its most deadliest wars. Upon remembering what time he had been, he immediately decided that he would buy two tickets to Galesburg, Illinois. Sadly, the currency used was different in that century.
  • The next day, therefore, he took all his savings and got them converted  though they would bear losses. He went to the third stage but couldn't find it.  It worried his wife and the psychiatrist Sam, who said he'd be hallucinating to take refuge from today's troubling truth and miseries
  • Charley thus resorts to his stamp collection in order to distract himself. Charley's friends thought he had not been mentally well when he told his friends about his unusual experience at Grand Central Station. They said he was worried like anyone in the modern world and he escaped from  the realities of life by spending time with his stamps.
  • Suddenly he finds a letter one day from his recently absent friend Sam. Sam wrote that he always wanted to believe in the theory of the third level and he encourages Charley and Louisa to never stop looking for it, now that he himself is there.
