OK communism collapsed because the economy collapsed more or less  i would say it start with

1.  Gorbachev came into power and his ideas glasnost and perestroika went  into play.

perestroika- was to make mother Russia more towards a hybrid communist- capitalist system.

glasnost- focused on the personal issues of restrictions of the soviet people. especially since for years the people lived without freedom of speech and race and religion.

these ideas hastened the fall instead of preventing it. because since loosening the hold of people and making reforms to political and economic elites it made the government seems weak

2. OK this one is bit in the past but before Gorbachev. Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin were the  ones leading the soviet union. they followed Marxism but that wasn't followed in future generations. in 1960 to 70s the elite Party was increasing in wealth and power while the soviet people were poor and most died from starvation. this caused fights amongst themselves especially since the people refused to accept the rule and beliefs of this elite party

3. Ronald Reagan supporting the strategic defense initiative nullified soviet nuclear arsenal. and he also attacked the soviets economy by isolating them from rest of world economy.

4.  the economy had a limited  of resources. if too much money was spent of guns and artillery, resources would be lacking.

Stalins " five years plan" was to increase the production of capital goods. since the soviet unions needed to industrialize to compete with the rest of the world they funneled all available resources to that  goal. unfortunately for the soviet people the consumer goods dropped. the citizens didn't have basic clothes or so. they cried out for revolution.

5. and finally the nation itself composed of 15 radically different republics and ethnic groups.

so bullying of ethnic minorities majorly increase intentions along outlying provinces.

nationalists movements along eastern Europe spread far and wide . so many former soviet allies started splitting.

and as many soviet republics  pulled away the central state was fatally weakened and buy time 1991 the soviet Union was no more.
