An unsuccessful coup by Communist Party hard-liners in August 1991 sealed the Soviet Union's fate by diminishing Gorbachev's power and propelling democratic forces, led by Boris Yeltsin, to the forefront of Russian politics. On December 25, Gorbachev resigned as leader of the USSR.

Prior to the revolution in Russia, the economy followed the communist approach. Due to the communism, Russia passed through a state where people were wage less and faced oppression from the ruling government. There were many reasons for its decline in Russia, however, the use of a single language by common people of Russia, which created a sense of unity among them. Consequently, they prepared themselves to vote out the communist form of government.
