on march 12, 1930, mahatma gandhi started a march from sabarmati ashram in ahmedabad to the sea shore. the government controlled the making and selling of salt and everyone had to pay a tax that is why it started.

It was started on 12 march 1930 by mahatma gandhi. The dandi march started from sabarmati ashram and ended on eastern coast of India. It was aimed at breaking the salt law according to which no body was allowed to manufacture salt without the permission of Britishers.
