Answer:

The word ‘democracy’ comes from a Greek word meaning ‘rule by the people.’ It’s used to describe a system of government where power is held by the citizens. They can impact important decisions, either directly or through the people they elect.

Democracy is based on freedom and equality between all people. It’s often described as the ‘rule of the majority’, as important decisions are based on the votes of the people

What we actually ‘need’ is a form of authority that actually cares about people. We only had Kings till Greece birthed Democracy about 3000 years ago. But as great Kings are extremely rare as we know throughout the recorded history of some 5000 years, I’d say Democracy is the best option of running a society we can think of where people’s voices can be heard. Without Democracy, even thinking about something that is opposed by authority might get you killed or worse.

Dissent is one of the powers that Democracy gives to everybody which is not possible unless the authority chooses to be liberal about it. Before Democracy, there’s power passing down through bloodlines or through bloodshed. And the fate of the people was entirely dependent on the mood of the Kings.

Democracy is the seemingly best option of politics we’ve got. However, Democracy has a weakness. Citizens of a Democracy will mostly fit into 3 I’s. Innocent, ignorant and informed.

Children and apolitical citizens comes under innocent class. They are mostly unaware of current politics and chances are they’ll vote for a charismatic leader without knowing the real options out there in political race.

Blind followers, far lefts and far rights comes under ignorant class. They won’t listen to reason. They keep pointing each other for their mistakes while doing every immoral thing they can to gain power and then some more to keep it.

Now the minority of the Democracy, informed citizens. These guys see through the smoke screens of Politicians. Most of them listen to artists, philosophers and activists instead of the controlled information out there.

With the clashes between opinions and News that are run these days, I don’t see a near future where the recipe of a flourishing Democracy in sight, where well informed citizens can call out the mistakes of the authority without facing any intimidation or discrimination.

Hence, nowadays, I often wonder of going back to King’s rule. Imagine, a King elected by people that provides his people with basic freedoms (which people will decide) and can take executive decisions that are monitored by a group of ministers. The King has the people’s best interests in mind and the best part is as this is a 21st century King, no matter how great leader he is, the power won’t be passed down to next of his kin.

But as Julius Caesar (and countless others) proved, power can corrupt even the greatest of our leaders. So we can’t trust Kings anymore.

We’re stuck with Democracy as far as I can see into the future. So what happens when the best option we have to run the States isn’t enough? Inequality in financial, educational, social and human rights.

But still, like I said earlier, I don’t see any better option out there right now. So till we find and implement one, we’re gonna have Democracy which could easily turn into Demagogue as long as we have a Charismatic leader with controlled information for ill-educated citizens.
