According to doctrine of lapse:-
a dependent state would pass into british hands if the king died without any natural male hier. it does not provide the right to adopt any child.
it was introduced by lord dalhousie in 1848.
satara, sambalpur , udaipur, nagpur and jhansi were all annexed under this policy.
