The  early man first make fire :

⇒ Fire occurs naturally in the environment and early Hominids learned to “save” some burning embers that they could then transport and use to rekindle a fire.

⇒ The saw that lighting caused fire so they made the connection between making a spark and fire.

⇒ So they experimented to find ways to make sparks, they succeeded in doing so with flint and another rock.

⇒ It took skill to start a fire with sparks and they learned what kind of tinder was needed and how to keep it dry etc…

⇒  Later, they figured out how friction could be used to start fire.

⇒ One very clever person even found that water could start fire when carefully placed on clear calcite or mica so that it acted as a lens. The lens would then be used to focus light to make fire.

√  The benefits of making fire are:

1) The control of fire by early humans was a turning point in the cultural aspect of human evolution that allowed humans to cook food and obtain warmth and protection.

2) Making fire also allowed the expansion of human activity into the dark and colder hours of the night, and provided protection from predators and insects

Explanation:

  • The evidence suggesting man discovery of fire dates back to the Middle Paleolithic period during the Stone Age period, where Homo erectus was the first to use it.
  • It was one of the most significant discoveries of early man, where the earliest evidence associated with fire use is traced to early humans from Oldowan hominid sites in Lake Turkana, Kenya.
  • Early man learned to make fire first through lighting, which would strike forests and create a fire. The fire obtained naturally was then kept burning to use for other purposes such as warming himself and cooking food.

Benefits of using fire by early man

  1. To Cook food (plants and animals)
  2. To Warm himself during cold nights
  3. The fire also provided light and heat to cook
  4. Fire also protected early man from predators.
