He was very sad after seeing the life loss after the battle as the battle of Kalinga was very life taking and took a lot of lives of soldiers. Even though ashoka won, he had still lost a lot of his fellow soldiers and vowed to always choose the path of peace afterwards. The conquest of Kalinga was ashoka last and later he converted to Buddhism.
