Answer:

Europeans came to India as traders in the 17th century. Indians at that time their mindset was very mean, one was always looking over his shoulder thinking of the chances of a change of leadership. Lack of unity. Fighting for power and authority. This was advantageous for Europeans and led to their political power over India.

Explanation:

  • East India Company got its monopoly rights to trade in 1600.
  • Its main objective was their interest in the spices of the East Indies. Then it came to India for the secondary purpose of securing cotton for sale.
  • They found the Portuguese enjoying the Mughal recognition at the western Indian port of Surat.
  • English secured the right to trade and factories were established in return for becoming the naval auxiliaries of the empire.
  • With the help of the Mughals, in the 17th-century peaceful trading through factories were operated.
  • This got their grip over Surat and later Hugli (1651) in Bengal.
  • In the South, a factory at Masulipatnam (1611) was moved to Chennai granted by a Hindu raja (1640).
  • Later in 1647, it came under the control of the Golconda sultans and passed to the Mughals in 1687.
  • Gujarat and Madras supplied cotton goods, Gujarat supplied indigo and silk, Bengal gave sugar and saltpetre. Spice trade along the coast of Malabar.
  • The supremacy in Indian politics suddenly shifted to Europeans.
  • The advantage of discipline was a boon for Europeans. Troops were always loyally guaranteed by regular pay.
  • A problem with Indian armies during that time was the lack of means to pay them.
  • This was grabbed by the Europeans. they trained Indians in the European manner, their advantage increased, well-disciplined which removed the uncertain factor of personal leadership, and regular pay increased the European's command over the Indian soldiers.

Hence, the Europeans made it all the way from traders to political power.
