French Revolution started with the storming of Bastille. Bastille is a huge castle fort originally built to repel attack from the enemy centuries earlier, in the late 18th century it has been turned to a prison. Prison maybe huge but despite of that it only holds 4 prisoners and the crowd just stormed it for the sake of acquiring guns.

Before the storming of Bastille,France had involved in some costly wars. First, the Seven Years War also known in the Americas as French and Indian War. France tried to build a huge navy hoping to challenged the Royal Navy but then their Navy got destroyed eventually. Battles around almost all continents. They lost the war.

But then not long after Seven Years War, Great Britain even though they won the war, was broke too. So they tried to impose more taxes on tea. The tax was around 3 or 4% (Now i dont understand about all this tax thing. Not really sure if those numbers considered high or not). The colonies, angered because the Brits tried to imposed tax on them without representatives, revolted against them.

France thought it is the perfect time for revenge against British, after all they lost the previous war. Long story short, US and France eventually won, the Brits gets out of the US and here comes the problem. Having been lost in the Seven Years War is without doubt costly, Very costly. And with that, they immediately joined another war. So that means the treasury empty.

Food shortages, harvest failures, etc, etc affects the populations harshly. France is declared bankruptcy. King Louis XVI try to find a solution. Calling the Estate General which has not been used since 17th century (and if the King calling the Estate General, you know the situation is fucked up).

The Estates General is divided by 3 estates. First, the clergy. Second, the nobles. Third, everyone else. The third outnumbered the 2 estates but the 2 estates dont want more taxes and since they have this kind of veto thing, the problem is not solved. The third angered by this. Leave the Estates General and decides to make their own kind of assembly. The National Assembly.

But when they tried to meet in their usual meeting place, Salle des Etats, King Louis XVI decided to send troops and all like “oh sorry guys, this building is closed and if you cant assemble, how do you become a National Assembly ?”. National Assembly later meet at another place and declared the Tennis Court Oath.

[Many moments and events later]

The storming of Bastille.

Hope it will help you!

1. Political Cause:

During the eighteen the Century France was the centre of autocratic monarchy. The French Monarchs had unlimited power and they declared themselves as the “Representative of God”.Louis XIV was the exponent of this view. Marie Antoinette was the daughter of Marie Theresa, the Austrian Empress. She always felt proud as she was the daughter of Austrain Empress. She always enjoyed luxurious and extravagant life. She sowed seed of the French Revolution.

2. Social Cause:

The then French Society was divided into three classes— the Clergy, Nobles and Common People. The higher clergy occupied the top position in the society. They exploited the common people in various ways. The Nobility was regarded as the Second Estate in the French Society. They also did not pay any tax to the king. So they influenced the people for revolution. They aroused the common people about their rights. Thus, the common people became rebellious. The lower Clergies and the provincial nobles also joined their hands with the common people along with the bourgeoisie. So the
