In 1774, LouisVI (Bourbon dynasty) ascended the throne of France. The reasons for the revolution could be summed up as due to following issues.

1) Finding an empty treasure, he imposed heavy taxes on citizens, that too on 1 category of people. French society was divided into 3 estates then, Clergy,Nobility and 3rd estate including businessman, merchants, officials, lawyers, peasants, artisans.... 1st two estate citizens were exempted from paying any taxes.

2) The population increment during that time demanded more food grains, but the production was unable to cope up with the pace of population growth, led to increase in price of bread.

3) Improper voting system led to protests by 3rd estate representatives.

In 1789, they (3rd estate citizens) declared themselves as a National Assembly and drafted a constitution in 1791 abolishing the feudal system of taxes and members of clergy and nobility were forced to give up their powers and limited the powers of the monarch.

Though the king signed the Constitution, he entered into secret negotiations with King of Prussia. Political clubs were formed to carry the revolution further and one of them was Jacobin club. In 1792, they attacked the Kings Palace and held him as hostage for several hours. Elections were held and came up the newly elected assembly called Convention. It declared France as Republic and the King was sentenced to death in 1793. Then political instability in the later years paved the way for the rise of military dictator, Napolean Bonaparte (1804)

The ideas of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity were the most important legacy of the French Revolution. These were spread from France to other European Nations during 19th century.
