Following are the efforts made by Gandhi Ji  to integrate the depressed classes into society:

1. He opposed the introduction of the concept of separate electorates for the Dalits or the depressed classes as he considered that the separate electrol would divide the society of India on caste basis. For this, he began a fast for indefinite time in September 1932.

2. He convinced Dalits to give up the demands of separate electorates by the Poona pact of 1932.

3. He thought that Swaraj would only come with the elimination of untouchability and caste system. Thus he called Dalits Harijans (the children of God). And Appealed the upper classes to drop the idea of untouchability and accept the depressed class as an integrated part of Indian society.
