For long congress had ignored the dalits for fear of offending the santanis, the high cast Hindus.

Gandhiji called them harijan or children of God. Gandhiji believed that swaraj would not come in 100 years if untouchablity is not removed.

He organised satyagraha for them, to secure their entry into the temples and access to public wells, tanks, roads and schools.
