mahatma gandhi declare swaraj would not come for hundred years if the untouchability was not eleminated

he called untouchables harijans ( children of god )

he organised satyagraha to secure them entry into temples and access to public facilities

he himself cleaned the toilets to dignify the work of bhangi

and persuaded the upper caste to change their minds  and give up the sin of untouchability
