Gardening helped the inmates of Tolstoy as it helped them to realize the dignity of labour. It will show them that any work can be done by anybody and there is nothing called like high or low. It will also make the inmates healthy as it can be done as a form of physical exercise. Thus in this way the mind, spirit and body of the inmates were taken care of.
