How did Gautama learn the truth about life?

He was a prince in a palace and all this servants and his dad the king fired all the men who were old or ugly. He eventually found out that the world wasn't as nice as it seemed. After he saw the real world and how it was he was determined to find out the truth of life. He starved himself and did things that harmed him and eventually he that that he would sit under  tree until he found out the truth of life. He was there for 49 days and then he said he found out the truth of life.
