George Washington contributed a lot to American History. He commanded the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War (which was from 1775 to 1783). Washington was also the first president of the United States, holding this position from 1789 up to 1797. He was a general, giving him a military role, and seeing as he led the army, he was deemed worthy enough to lead the country itself.
