Gerrard made the intruder believe in his false story wherein he told him that he himself was being chased by the police and that's why he had the kind of a lifestyle he had. He also told the intruder that he was expecting a phone call in case the police arrives. At that very moment he recieved a phone call. He declared that the police had arrived and they had to flee. Gerrard told the intruder to follow him or else they both will be discovered abd subsequently arrested. The intruder ended up believing his made up story and Gerrard shoved him in his wardrobe by tricking him into believing that he was opening the door to the exit. This is how Gerrard saved himself from the intruder by using his presence of mind.
