Answer: Instead of having patents to protect product secrets (whether artistic or architectural, etc.) guilds were groups of talented and knowledgeable individuals who banded together to teach others their talents. In medieval times, guilds were a way to provide confidence in a product to customers. Apprentices joined for life in exchange for the privilege of being taught a trade. If they left the guild, however, they no longer carried the same respect, reputation, and backing as they would if they had stayed. The Master Artist in this story was retired, however, and at that point no longer cared about what the guild provided.
