Answer:

Explanation:

The Last lesson is a prose set in the times of the Franco-Prussian war written by a French writer Alphonse Daudet. This story revolves around the importance of mother tongue to it's citizens and how language forms one's identity and freedom.

On that day, Franz arrived at school to find his tutor M.Hamel  dressed in his best clothes that he only used to wear on inspection and prize days. M.Hamel was also kinder and gentler than usual. He didn't scold Franz when he arrived late to school and when he hadn't studied his lesson on participles.

M.Hamel went on to talk about the beauty of the french language saying it was the most beautiful and clearest language in the world. He regretted for the wasted time and opportunity and blamed parents for sending their children to work rather than to school. He also blamed himself for sending the students to water his flowers and giving them a holiday when he wanted to go fishing instead of learning their lessons.

He advised his students to keep their mother tongue close to their hearts and never let go of it. As long as they do this, it is as if they had the key to their prison. In order to enslave the citizens of a country completely they needed to conquer their hearts and minds too.  At the end of the lesson M.Hamel could not go on as he was filled with emotions and he wrote on the blackboard as large as he could 'Vive Le France' (Long Live France) and dismissed his class.
