St. Peter punished the old lady by changing her into a woodpecker that would have to build a nest to live in and gather scanty food all day long by boring in the hard dry wood.
- The old lady was too selfish and greedy in the poem "The Legend of Northland", and was cursed to turn into a woodpecker in the end. One day St. Peter came to Northland to deliver a religious speech.
- He was hungry after the speech as he had fasted the entire day and was too weak. He walked along and found the old lady who was baking cakes. He asked the old lady for a piece of cake as he was very hungry.
- But the selfish old lady refused to give so as the cake she baked was too big. She baked the small cake and felt that was too big. She took a small dough and rolled it to make it so thin and flat. This behavior angered St. Peter which made him curse the old lady to turn into a woodpecker.
