To give practical shape to his concept of Education, Gandhiji sought the help of educational experts. He asked them to draw up a scheme of basic education according to the principle that all knowledge, skills, and activities which were regarded to be necessary for the education of the child, should center round some useful craft and the whole process should be permeated with the spirit of a social and moral philosophy based on truth and non-violence. The Government of India also accepted the scheme of basic education with some reservations and wanted all primary education to be gradually remodeled on this pattern. At the end of 1956, schools of the basic type were educating over 1 million children.
